Woodlands Restoration and Expansion
Woodlands Restoration and Expansion
Focus Environment
The Rottnest Foundation is committed to supporting the implementation of the Rottnest Island Woodland Management Plan which aims to propagate and plant up to 5,000 seedlings per year to improve the habitat for unique and threatened bird-life, reptiles and fauna.
Delivery of the plan will enhance and expand the ‘Woodland’ habitat on Rottnest Island and provide opportunities for the corporate sector and the Western Australian community to engage and contribute to the conservation of Rottnest Island.
Rottnest Island is an A-class reserve. It is in Whadjuk Noongar country and its Noongar name is Wadjemup, the resting place of the spirits. The Rottnest Island reserve covers 1,859 hectares. All flora and fauna are protected for conservation and recreation.
Woodland species include Rottnest Island pine, Rottnest Island tea tree and coastal pittosporum interspersed with low heath consisting of prickle lily and spear grass.
Majority of Woodland is not naturally regenerating and requires management action/intervention.
Woodland restoration work commenced in 1963 to replace habitat lost through Quokka grazing and European settlement. The woodland habitat typically stores 10x more carbon than grasslands.
Be a part of returning the Woodland ecosystems to their natural state for future generations.
Project Outcomes
• Restore the island’s natural habitat prior to European settlement and conserve the woodland ecosystems for future generations
• Contribute to the conservation and recovery of the threatened ecological community
• Revegetate with endemic species, a further 53 hectares with 70,000 seedlings
to bolster the island’s pine and tea tree woodlands
• Provide food, habitat and wildlife corridors for the quokkas, birds, frogs and reptiles, all of which are protected species
Funding Opportunities
• Site clusters of varying sizes
• Opportunity for staff volunteering connected to site selection
